Harley
Harley rats are a long-coated variety of the domestic fancy rat, with fur that is longer, softer, and more wispy than a standard coat. The hair often lies in uneven waves or a loose, tousled layer rather than forming the tight curl of a rex. Harley can occur in many colors and patterns because the trait affects coat length and texture, not the base color. It remains a specialty variety in many rat communities, and recognition or show standards can differ by club and region.
Coat care is usually simple, but harley rats benefit from clean bedding and a diet that supports healthy skin rather than excess bathing or oils. Some lines have been associated with thinner coats, skin greasiness, or poor lactation in does, so responsible breeding matters more than producing a dramatic coat. A prospective owner should ask whether the line has normal growth, easy breathing, and good maternal history if breeding is planned. As pets, harleys still need the same essentials as other fancy rats: companionship, climbing space, chew-safe enrichment, and calm handling from an early age.
