Cröllwitzer
The Cröllwitzer turkey is a European domestic turkey variety associated with German poultry breeding and often recognized for light plumage edged or marked with darker patterning. It belongs to the heritage and exhibition side of turkey aviculture rather than the fast-growing commercial turkey industry. As with many regional varieties, individual lines may differ in size, markings, and how closely they match a national standard.
Small-flock keepers value birds like the Cröllwitzer for genetic diversity, visual character, and traditional poultry breeding. They need ordinary turkey fundamentals: clean footing, secure nighttime housing, weather protection, room to move, and feed that supports steady growth without pushing them like industrial meat birds. Breeding programs should keep hatch records and select for vigor as well as pattern, especially where rare varieties are maintained by only a modest number of enthusiasts.
