Red
Red is a broad plumage label for domestic turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) that show warm chestnut, copper, or mahogany tones rather than the dark bronze or black patterns seen in many heritage flocks. It may be used casually for Bourbon Red, Red Bronze, Auburn-influenced birds, or local red strains, so the word by itself does not identify a single recognized breed. The shade can range from rich reddish brown to lighter buff-red, and patterning on the wings and tail depends on the line behind it.
Anyone buying or breeding red turkeys should ask how the stock is defined by the breeder, because mature size, growth rate, and fertility may differ more than color. Most red heritage-type birds are managed with secure night housing, dry litter, and room to forage, while poults still need warm brooding and a high-protein starter. Breeding pens usually focus on even color, sound legs, and natural mating ability rather than extreme body weight.
