Samurai
Samurai betta is a domestic Betta splendens pattern associated with dragon-scale and metallic breeding. The classic look is a dark, often black body with white, silver, or pale metallic scales laid over the head and upper body like armor, leaving darker areas exposed below. Black samurai, white samurai, and half-samurai are common retail names, although coverage and contrast vary widely. It may appear on plakat, halfmoon, or other fin types; the label describes scale pattern and color placement, not a separate species.
Keepers should examine samurai bettas carefully because heavy dragon scaling can grow over the eyes, a problem hobbyists often call diamond eye. A fish that tracks food, reacts to movement, and has clear eye margins is a safer purchase than one with the heaviest mask. Husbandry is standard for bettas: warm water, gentle flow, and secure individual housing for males. Breeding samurai lines can intensify the armored look, but selecting only for thick scales may also increase vision problems, so balanced stock matters.
