Wild Type
Wild type betta fish are Betta splendens bred or selected to resemble the natural Siamese fighting fish rather than the exaggerated ornamental forms common in pet stores. They typically have shorter fins, a brown to olive body, green or blue iridescent scaling, and red, blue, or dark edging in the fins. The term may describe domestic wild-type-looking fish or captive lines with closer wild ancestry, so source information matters when someone is looking for true locality or conservation-related stock.
These bettas are usually more agile than heavy long-finned forms and appreciate planted cover, a tight lid, warm water, and subdued places to retreat. Males can still be strongly territorial and are usually separated unless a breeder is supervising a short pairing. For keepers working with wild or locality lines, avoiding crosses with ornamental bettas helps preserve useful genetic and provenance information.
