Abigar

Abigar cattle are an indigenous African cattle type most associated with the Gambella region of western Ethiopia and neighboring areas of South Sudan. They are often described as Sanga or zebu-influenced cattle, reflecting the long mixing of African taurine and humped cattle in pastoral herds. Animals are usually medium to large, with variable coat colors and horns that may be long or spreading depending on local selection. In communities such as the Nuer and Anuak, cattle are a source of milk, meat, bridewealth, and stored wealth in seasonal river and grassland landscapes.

Abigar herds are managed around floodplain grazing, water access, biting insects, and disease pressure rather than barns or high-concentrate feeding. Their practical strengths are adaptation to heat, walking, and local forage, but productivity can fall quickly when animals are moved into unfamiliar climates or parasite challenges. Breeding programs should document herd origin because the name may cover related local strains rather than one closed registry population. In conservation or development settings, improving veterinary care and calf survival is usually safer than replacing the cattle with less adapted exotic dairy or beef breeds.
