Bargur

Bargur cattle are an indigenous hill breed from the Bargur or Barugur hills of Erode district in Tamil Nadu, India. They are medium to small zebu cattle, typically reddish brown to brown with white markings, a pronounced hump, and strong legs suited to rocky, uneven country. The breed developed under grazing systems linked to forest and hill pasture, where agility, endurance, and alertness mattered more than heavy milk production. Bargur bullocks have long been valued for quick movement and draft ability, especially in hilly terrain and traditional cart or field work.

Managing Bargur cattle differs from managing quiet stall-fed dairy breeds. They are active animals with a spirited reputation, so experienced handlers, secure yards, and patient training are important. Traditional herds rely heavily on grazing, supplemented with crop residues and seasonal fodder, and cows are generally modest milkers. Conservation concerns include reduced grazing access, crossbreeding, and loss of working demand for native bullocks. Breeders trying to maintain the breed look for red-and-white type, sound hooves, heat tolerance, and cows that calve regularly under low-input conditions.
