Hariana

Hariana, also spelled Haryana, is a North Indian zebu cattle breed from the plains of Haryana and adjoining parts of Delhi, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh. It is a dual-purpose breed, but its reputation was built mainly on strong bullocks for ploughing and transport. Hariana cattle are typically white to light gray, with bulls often darker around the neck, shoulders, and hump. They have a long head, moderate horns, a well-developed hump, and the heat tolerance expected of cattle shaped by hot, dry farming districts.

Village herds have long used Hariana cattle in mixed crop-livestock systems, where animals turn crop residues, straw, and local fodder into draft power, calves, manure, and household milk. Cows generally milk better than many purely draught zebu breeds, but they do not match specialized dairy breeds. Management is usually straightforward in hot climates if animals have shade, clean water, and enough green fodder or supplements during lean seasons. Buyers looking for pure Hariana should distinguish them from ordinary gray local crossbreds and pay attention to leg soundness, udder quality, and the source of breeding bulls.
