Tux-Zillertal

Tux-Zillertal cattle are an Austrian Alpine breed from Tyrol, formed from the related Tux and Zillertal populations of the Zillertal and neighboring valleys. They are compact to medium sized, muscular, and usually black or red with clear white markings on the underside, tailhead, belly, and sometimes the face. The breed carries a forceful mountain-cow temperament and has been associated with traditional contests between cows, so its local value has never rested only on milk or carcass traits.

Modern Tux-Zillertal herds are kept for meat, conservation, grazing steep pasture, and regional identity. They suit high alpine forage and rough weather better than intensive lowland production, but their strength and social ranking behavior call for calm facilities, secure gates, and handlers who read cattle well. Breeders should select for sound feet, fertility, manageable cows, useful mothering ability, and true type. Because population size is limited, planned matings and exchange between herds are important for keeping lines broad.
